Simon Merz, PhD

R&D Project Manager

Simon F. Merz, PhD, is currently a member of the R&D department at Miltenyi Biotec, focusing on the development of light sheet microscopy. He obtained both his bachelor's degree and master of science (MS) at the University of Heidelberg, the latter with a focus on neuroscience, bringing him in contact with light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) for the first time. After obtaining his MS, Dr. Merz worked as an application and product specialist for LaVision BioTec GmbH, gaining insight into the UltraMicroscope II and its various applications. Following this, he obtained his PhD in 2020 at the Institute for Experimental Immunology and Imaging in Essen, Germany, under the supervision of Dr. Matthias Gunzer and Dr. Joachim Klode (University Hospital). Dr. Merz’s doctoral research focused on the development and application of whole-organ clearing and imaging approaches applied to murine and human samples. The Miltenyi Biotec R&D manager’s long-term goal is to implement light sheet microscopy into routine clinical diagnostics.

Biography

Byron Hartman, PhD

Microscopy Product Manager

Byron Hartman received his PhD in Biological Structure from the University of Washington in 2009 and then moved to Stanford University for postdoctoral and early-stage independent research. For his significant body of research into the development and regeneration of sensory organs, he was awarded multiple NIH fellowships and research grants and developed tools and expertise in mouse transgenics, fluorescent protein engineering, tissue staining and clearing, and advanced microscopy. Dr. Hartman joined Miltenyi Biotec in 2019 as the Microscopy Product Manager with the goal to drive scientific discovery and make cancer history by contributing to the advancement of 3D microscopy technology and applications.

Clare Sengupta, PhD

Field Application Scientist

Clare Sengupta earned her PhD in the biology department’s Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program at the University of Maryland, College Park. She studied hormonal methods of reinstating adult brain plasticity in the rodent visual cortex for her dissertation work. Before that, she earned a master’s degree in molecular microbiology and immunology at Johns Hopkins University and completed two years of research training at the NIH. Dr. Sengupta has experience in a wide variety of techniques in cell biology, molecular biology, and neurobiology with a strong expertise in 3D imaging and sample preparation for light and electron microscopy.
